Should minors receive life imprisonment for serious crimes?
I am of the opinion that minors should not receive life imprisonment for serious crimes. Aside from the fact that they are not mature enough, there are various factors causing them to commit crimes. Also, there are always possibilities for rehabilitation.
First, young people's brains are still growing. Research has shown that the decision-making part of our brains finishes developing in our early 20s, which means it is sometimes hard for minors to make the right decision. This must be taken into consideration when deciding punishment for minors.
Second, minors committing crimes have other issues leading them to commit crimes, such as their mental disability or abusive household. Statistics show that a large percentage of juveniles committing crimes have disabilities such as ADHD, LD, or autism.
Of course, I'm not saying children with those disabilities are more likely to commit crimes. However, when they are brought up in a terrible environment, where they are abused or neglected, children will likely lack self-esteem and compassion for people and end up committing crimes. What they need is not punishment but love and support.
Last, there are always possibilities for rehabilitation. As I mentioned in the last paragraph, juveniles committing crimes have suffered a lot and need proper support. If we can give them an environment where they can get adequate education and support, there are always possibilities for rehabilitation. One of the world-famous criminologists who has met thousands of criminals once mentioned "We've never met a monster.", which I think suggests that they can always change.
For the reasons mentioned above, we should give minors committing crimes not life imprisonment but proper education, support, and love.

未成年者は重罪で無期懲役を受けるべきか？
私は、未成年者が重大な犯罪を犯しても無期懲役にすべきではないと考えている。成熟していないという事実もさることながら、彼らが犯罪を犯す原因には様々な要因がある。また、更生の可能性は常にあるからである。
まず、若者の脳はまだ成長途中である。脳の意思決定部分は20代前半で発達が終わるという研究結果もあり、未成年者が正しい判断をするのは時に難しい。未成年者に対する刑罰を決める際には、この点を考慮しなければならない。
第二に、犯罪を犯す未成年者は、知的障害や虐待家庭など、犯罪を犯すに至る他の問題を抱えている。統計によれば、犯罪を犯す少年の多くがADHD、LD、自閉症などの障害を持っている。
もちろん、そうした障害を持つ子供が犯罪を犯しやすいと言っているわけではない。しかし、彼らが虐待を受けたり、ネグレクト（育児放棄）されたりするようなひどい環境で育つと、自尊心や人に対する思いやりに欠け、犯罪に走ってしまう可能性が高い。 彼らに必要なのは罰ではなく、愛情とサポートなのだ。
最後に、更生の可能性は常にあるという点である。前項で述べたように、犯罪を犯した少年は多くの苦しみを背負っており、適切な支援が必要である。彼らに十分な教育と支援を受けられる環境を与えることができれば、更生の可能性は必ずある。何千人もの犯罪者に会ってきた世界的に有名な犯罪学者の一人が、「私たちは怪物に会ったことがない」と言ったことがあるが、それは彼らが必ず変われることを示唆していると思う。
以上の理由から、犯罪を犯した未成年者には無期懲役ではなく、適切な教育、支援、愛情を与えるべきである。
