Should advertising for harmful substances such as alcohol and tobacco be more heavily restricted?
I am of the opinion that advertising for alcohol and tobacco should not be restricted. Advertising those substances itself doesn’t cause people to drink or smoke. Also, this will be a negative influence on the economy and the freedom to advertise their products should be protected.
First, restricting advertising does not keep people from drinking and smoking. Some research showed that the reason why people started drinking and smoking is not the advertisement. They would rather start drinking and smoking because their peers do so or just out of curiosity.
Second, limiting the advertisement of harmful products will have such a huge negative impact on the economy. Tobacco and alcohol companies spend billions of dollars every year on advertising, which certainly contributes to society. If advertising alcohol and tobacco were restricted, it will for sure have a huge influence on the economy.
Lastly, it is unethical to restrict the advertisement of tobacco and alcohol. There is actually a law that when advertising, these companies must make it clear that tobacco and alcohol can be harmful. As long as these companies obey the law, they should be able to advertise their products freely without restriction. People should smoke and drink less since these activities can be harmful. However, heavily restricting them is not the best way to stop people from drinking and smoking.
