今日は、家シリーズということで、家に関連する使えるイディオムを紹介します。
on the house
意味：お店のおごり
例：When the waitress realized it was my birthday, she said dessert was on the house.
「店員さんが、その日が私の誕生日だと気づいて、デザートは店のおごりですと言った」
hit the roof
意味：激怒する
例：Kate hit the rood when she found out her boyfriend cheated on her again.
「彼氏がまた浮気したと分かって、ケイトは激怒した」
*cheat on O「Oを裏切って浮気する」
*cheat with O「Oと浮気する」
drive O up the wall
意味：Oを狂わせる
例：The Sullivans makes so much noise late at night. Their parties drive the neighbors up the wall.
「サリバンさん家は夜遅くに大きな騒音をたてる。彼らのパーティーのせいで近所の人たちは気が狂いそうになる」
*the 名字s「〇〇さん一家」
bring down the house
意味：（演技などが）会場をうならせる、満場の大かっさいを博す
例：She became an instant celebrity when she brought down the house on a talent show.
「彼女はスター発掘番組で会場をうならせ、たちまち有名人になった」
go through the roof
意味：（価値が）非常に高くなる
例：When the new train station was built in town, prices of homes went through the roof.
「新しい駅が町にできて、家の価格がぐっと上がった」
意味：激怒する
例：When he got suspended from school, his parents went through the roof.
「彼が停学になったとき、彼の両親は激怒した」
*get suspended from school「停学になる」
