前回⇩に引き続き、私が広島県呉市の観光案内看板の翻訳をした時の、実際の翻訳の過程を紹介します。
全部で６つの看板の翻訳をしましたが、今回はそのうちの2つ目。
音戸の瀬戸公園という場所の看板です。

音戸の瀬戸公園（高烏砲台跡）
明治１９(1886)年、呉港に鎮守府設置が決まり、陸軍は広島湾と呉軍港を敵艦から守るため、２９(1896)年から３６(1903)年にかけて周囲の島や山などに呉要塞（のち広島湾要塞）を建設しました。
山頂に八咫烏（やたがらす）神社がある高烏（たかがらす）山にちなんだ高烏台にも明治３５年に砲台が完成しました。高烏砲台は広湾から呉湾に進入しようとする敵艦を攻撃するためのものでした。
高烏砲台は実戦に使われることはなく、その後も沈黙したまま大正１５(1926)年に廃止されました。その後、高烏砲台跡は海軍に引き継がれ、昭和期に入って高角砲が設置されました。戦後は廃墟となっていましたが、昭和３６(1961)年にこの一帯は音戸の瀬戸公園として整備されています。

In 1902, construction of Takagarasu Battery was completed in order to attack enemy ships invading Kure Port through Hiro Port. It took its name from the mountain upon which it stood and there was Yatagarasu Shrine on the top of the mountain.
高烏砲台は実戦に使われることはなく、その後も沈黙したまま大正１５(1926)年に廃止されました。その後、高烏砲台跡は海軍に引き継がれ、昭和期に入って高角砲が設置されました。
Takagarasu Battery was never used in action and abolished in 1926. Later, the Japanese Navy took over the possession of the battery and installed an anti-aircraft gun in the Showa period.
戦後は廃墟となっていましたが、昭和３６(1961)年にこの一帯は音戸の瀬戸公園として整備されています。
After the war was over, it fell into ruins. However, the preparation work was finished in 1961 and the whole area was open to the public as "Ondo-no-seto Park"

訂正②私の文は、日本語と同じように長ーーい１つの文になってしまっているので、簡潔な文に分ける。
訂正③ in order to protect Hiroshima Port を The fortress was made to protect Hiroshima Portに変える。確かにこうすることで文が簡潔になった！
※ここで気づいた私の悪い癖。日本語をそのまま英語にして、長い文章になりがち。硬い日本語の文章って長いけど、それをそのまま英語にするのではなく、英語にする時はできるだけ簡潔に、そして良い所で文章を区切らなければ！

訂正① 添削前後を比べてみましょう。

訂正後の文：Construction of Takagarasu Battery, which was built to attack enemy ships invading Kure Port through Hiro Port, was completed in 1902.
訂正前の文だと「高烏砲台は広湾から呉湾に侵入しようとする敵艦を攻撃するために完成した」という意味になってしまいます。そうではなく「高烏砲台（広湾から呉湾に侵入しようとする敵艦を攻撃するために作られたもの）は1902年に完成した」という意味にしたいのだから、エリックの添削完璧！
訂正② and there was Yatagarasu Shrine on the top of the mountainを,where Yatagarasu Shrie was also locatedにする。確かに ,where（関係副詞の非制限用法）のほうが断然かっこいい！

訂正①abolishをfell into disuseに変える。abolishという動詞は「（法律や習慣）を廃止する」という意味なので、確かにここではfell into disuse「使われなくなる」が正しいですね。

訂正①took over the possessionのtheを消す。（未だにtheの使い方が完璧に理解できていない私）
訂正② in the Showa periodをduring the Showa periodにする。
After the war was over, it the battery fell into ruins was abandoned. However ,but in 1961, the preparation work was finished and the whole area was reopened to the public as "Ondo-no-seto Park".
戦後は廃墟となっていましたが、昭和３６(1961)年にこの一帯は音戸の瀬戸公園として整備されています。
訂正① itをthe batteryに変える。確かに段落が変わったのだから代名詞itにすると何を指しているのか分かりずらい！
訂正② fell into ruinsをwas abandonedに変える。エリック曰くfell into ruinsでも全く問題ないんだけど、前の段落でfell into disuseという表現を使って、fell intoがかぶるので、was abandonedにしたらしい。文法的、表現的には全くOKでも同じような響きの表現は避けるとgood!
訂正③ 長ったらしい文になってしまっているので、the preparation work was finishedの一文を消して、openをreopenedにすることで意味も通じるようになった！エリックすごい！
