【丸暗記したいエッセイで使える英語表現】本論編

前回の繰り返しですが、

英作文をする時のポイントは、
使える表現を丸暗記して
「自分の引き出し」にストックしてくこと。

なので、実際にエッセイで使える表現を紹介します。
使えそうと思った表現は、丸暗記してください!

英語のエッセイは序論、本論、結論の3構造から成ります。
今日は本論で使える表現を紹介します。

 私が個人的によく使う表現に下線を引きます。

本論で使える表現

例を挙げるとき

●「Aを例にする」
・I'll take O for example.
●「例えば、S+Vである」
・For example, S+V
・For instance, S+V

●「Aの例として~ということがある」
・One example of A is that ~
例:One example of the most serious problem in developing countries is that children in labor are often denied thier access to education.
「発展途上国における最も深刻な問題の一つの例として、労働させられている子どもたちが教育を受けられないということである」

比較するとき

●「AはBと多くの点で違う」
・A is different from B in many ways

●「AはBといくつかの点で違う」
・A is different from B in several ways
●「AはBとS'がV'という点で違う」
・A is different from B in the fact that S'+V'

●「AとBは多くの点で類似する」
・A is similar to B in many ways

●「AとBはいくつかの点で類似する」
・A is similar to B in several ways

●「AとBには多くの類似点がある」
・There are many similarities between A and B

●「AとBはいくつかの共通点を持っている」
・A and B have several things in common

●「AとBを比較するとSがである」
・If you compare A and B, S+V

●「AとBを単純に比較することはできない」
・You just cannot simply compare A and B

●「SはS'がV'するという点で、Aとは全く違う」
・S differ(s) from A in that S’+V’
 例: TIME magazine differs from LIFE in that it is more serious.
   「タイム誌は、それがより真面目であるという点でライフ誌とは違う」

対照するとき

●「反対に、SがV」
・On the contrary, S+V

●「Aと対照的に、SがV」
・In contrast to A, S+V

●「一方でSがVである」
・On the other hand, S+V

●「対照的に」
・By contrast, 
例:The Chinese economy is growing rapidly. By contrast, Greece is still stuck in recession.
「中国経済は急速に発展している。対照的にギリシャはまだ不況から抜け出せずにいる」

●「SがVする反面、S'がV'である」
・ S+V, while S'+V'
例:Worrisome thoughts have adverse effects, while joyous thoughts have beneficial effects.

「厄介な考えが悪い影響を及ぼす反面、楽しい考えは有益な効果を及ぼす」

●「~する人もいれば、・・・の人もいる」
・Some people ~. Others ・・・
例:Some people try to work through problems on their own. Others tend to approach problem-solving as a group matter.
「一人で問題を克服しようとする人もいれば、問題解決にグループで取り組む傾向にある人もいる」
●「Aと違って、」
・Unlike A,

理由を述べるとき

●「これはS'がV'ということが理由である」
・This is because S'+V' 

●「理由はSがV'ということである」
・The reason is that  S'+V'

●「S'がV'するのでSがVする」
・S+V because S'+V'
・S+V, for S'+V'
・Since S'+V', S+V

●「このような理由でSがVなのである」
・For this reason, S+V

●「Aの理由はSがVすることである」
・The reason for A is that S+V

●「Aにはいくつかの重要な理由がある」
・There are several main reasons for A

●「それは、S'がV'という事実に大いに原因がある」
・ It’s largely due to the fact that S'+V'

●「SはAの結果であると思われる」
・S is/are thought to be the result of A
例:Illness is thought to be the result of an improper balance of the body’s forces.
 「病気は体の力の不適切なバランスの結果であると思われる」

●「一つ目の理由は~。2つ目の理由は~。」
The first reason is that S'+V'.
 The second reason is that S'+V’.

●「S'がV'することに対して3つの理由がある。1つ目、2つ目、そして最後に~である」
・There are three reasons why S'+V' ; firstly S+V、secondly, S+V, and lastly S+V.

順番に述べるとき

●「まず第一にS+V。第二にS+V、第三にS+V。そしてS+V。最後にS+V」
・Firstly, S+V. Secondly, S+V.  Thirdly, S+V.  Subsequently, S+V.  Lastly, S+V.

分類するとき

●「Oには2つの種類がある」
・There are two kinds of O.
・There are two types of O.

●「Oを2つの種類に分けたい」
・I'd divide O into two categories.
・I'd classify O into two kinds.
I'd categorize O into two types.

●「Sは~に分けられる」
・S is/are divided into ~

●「Sは3つのカテゴリーに分類される」
・S fall(s) into three categories.

事実を述べる時

●「実際、」
In fact, S V.

●「~という事実がある」
・There is a fact that S' V'.

●「実はS'+V'である」
・The fact is that S’+V’
  例:The fact is that meat is a highly concentrated form of nutriment.
「実は、肉はかなり凝縮された形の栄養素である」

●「事実は~だ」
・The truth is that S' V'.

影響を表す

●「SがOの一助、一因となる」
・S contributes to O
例:You can argue that having a lot of money contributes to unhappiness.
「お金を持っていることが、不幸になる一因となりうると言えます」  

●「SがOに直接関係している」
・S is directly related to O
例:Cancer of skin, breast, and colon are directly related to the intake of fats.
「皮膚がん、乳がん、直腸がんはどれも脂肪の摂取と直接関係している」

●S leads to O
「SがOにつながる」
例:I truly don't think that having children leads to happiness.
「子どもを持つことが幸せにつながるとは絶対に思いません」

●S will be affected by O.
「SはOの影響を受けるだろう」
例:Lots of people will be affecetd by the decision that Government made yesterday.
「昨日政府が下した決断に多くの人が影響を受けるだろう」

● so 形容詞/副詞 that S' V'
「とても形容詞/副詞なのでS’がV'」
例:It has been so hot that farmers cannot grow some vegetables.
「とても暑いので農家はいくつか野菜を育てられないでいる」

言い換える時

●「言い換えると、SがV」
・In other words, S+V

●「別の表現をすると、SがV」
・To put it another way, S+V

●「つまりは~だ」
・Gay couples have no legal right to marry, which means they are denided to numerous rights.
「同性愛者カップルは法的に結婚する権利を与えられていない、つまり多くの権利を否定されているのです」

●「一般的に言うと、SがV」
・Generally speaking, S+V

●「大体SがV」
・In most cases, S+V

●「Sは~する傾向がある」
・S tend(s) to+動詞の原形

●「~によると」
・According to ~,  
例:According to some psychologists, man has a habit of lying.
  「一部の心理学者によると、人間はうそをつく習癖を持っている」

●「Sは~する可能性が非常に高い」
・S is(/are) most likely to 動詞
例:Which of the following situations is most likely to make you sick? 
「次の中でどの状況が一番あなたを病気にする可能性が高いでしょうか」

●「Aの数は~と見積もられる」
・The number of A is estimated at ~
例: The number of vegetarians in Europe is estimated at several million.
 「ヨーロッパの菜食主義者の数は数百万人と見積もられる」

●「それは、S'がどれくらい形/副であるかによる」
That depends on how 形容詞/副詞 S’+V’
 例:That depends on how efficient it is.
    「それはどれぐらい効率的であるかによる」

●「SはX上がって結局Yとなった」
・S rose by X to Y.
 例:Inflation rose by 3% to 9.5%.
 「インフレーションが3%上がって9.5%になった」

●~するかは…による
・Whether 主語+動詞 ( or not ) depends on
例:Whether we can achieve the goal or not depends on three factors.
「我々がその目標を達成できるかできるかどうかは、3つの要因による(次第だ)」
