解説
Allisonのように生徒として学校に通っている場合、schoolと言えば、学校という建物より機関としての学校を意味します。そういう場合theは不要です。
Allisonのお母さんのように生徒でない人がある別の目的を持って『学校という場所に行く』と言う時はtheをつけてthe schoolと言います。
theをつけることで「学校という建物」という具体性が加わります。
本来の目的（学校なら生徒が勉強しに行く）でその場所（機関）に行く場合、theは不要。
本来の目的以外（親が先生に会いに学校に行く、など）でその場所に行く場合は、theが必要です。
school（学校）のほかにも
college【名】大学、church【名】教会、hospital【名】病院、prison【名】刑務所
も同様です。
prison（刑務所）

本来刑務所は罪を犯した人が入れられる機関。

hospital（病院）

病院は怪我、病気をした場合に通院、入院する機関。
Joeは事故で怪我して病院にいるのでtheは不要。
Emily went to the hospital to visit Joe. She is at the hospital now.
Emily入院しているJoeを訪ねて病院という場所に行くのでtheが必要
church（教会）
Sally’s father goes to church every Sunday.
教会に行く本来の目的は礼拝などの宗教的な行事。
Sallyのお父さんは毎週日曜日の礼拝のために教会という機関行っているのでtheは不要
Some men went to the church to repair the roof.
*repair the roof = 屋根を修理する
男性たちは屋根を修理するために教会という場所に行くのでtheが必要
